Build A Rhythm Workshops: Making Drums from Around the World

MIM Drums Class

The Musical Instrument Museum, Ear Candy Charity and Arizona Rhythm Connection will present a fun and educational way for parents/caregivers and children ages eight-11 to beat the heat. In a series of Saturday morning workshops (10am-12pm), participants will discover the cultural roots of drums from around the world, build them and learn to play them. Visits to the MIM exhibits are included.
The schedule is as follows:
July 3: Buhai drum (Romania) and Bongo drum (Cuba)
July 10: Lakota drum (North America)
July 17: Dondo drum (Ghana)
July 24: Adufe drum (Portugal)
July 31: Free friends and family concert

Individual workshops are $35 per person. (One adult can register up to two children per workshop.) The cost for all four workshops is $120 per person ($20 savings) if purchased at the same time. The final concert on July 31 is free for friends and family, and admission to the museum is available for purchase. Each child will receive a limited number of passes to the concert for friends and family. Register online at themim.org or call 480.478.6001.

Out There: A place for kids and parents to find out what's going on and who's doing what

Babysitting Classes Offered
Paradise Valley Hospital is offering a summer babysitting course for kids aged 11- to 15-years-old. The introduction to babysitting covers basic child development, feeding, safety concerns, play, diapering and first aide. The class takes place on Saturday, July 10 from 10am-1pm. The cost is $20. Back-to-SchoolBack To School Drive
About 500 Scottsdale students are in need two new sets of clothes, backpacks, school supplies and shoes. Vista del Camino Community Center and Concerned Citizens for Community Health will accept items through August 2, but would prefer to have them by July 21. Cash donations will also be accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Monetary donations to CCCH are eligible for the Helping the Working Poor Tax Credit for 2010. Family Fun At The Art Museum
The ASU Art Museum will host the 11th Annual Family Fun Day on July 10. The event includes free hands-on art making projects, refreshments, performances and a visit from a PBS character. Summer Family Night at the Museum at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, (7374 East Second Street), takes place on July 30. The evening includes a puppet show, hands-on art projects, splashing in the fountain, cool refreshments. The event costs $20/family of four and begins at 5:30pm.
